I've had both 2X4 and 4X4 like most people here. I've never really needed the 4X4 except to cool my transmission while going up a very long steep grade on a gravel road. The road is the Union Pass road in Dubois WY. You top out at 9300 feet. Using low range will cool your transmission. I will also use low range for is creeping over rough terrain. Something most people wouldn't do anyway.
