It normally doesn't take more than a minute, two at most. Opening and closing the faucet while listening to how the pump responds. That drain line trick may help also. If not, then checking the inlet hose on the pump for tightness would be the next obvious step. Once air is removed from the pump inlet the rest will take care of itself.
