Wow, is the first thing I could of. Run, don't walk, away from whoever told you this. The only way shocks wouldn't make a difference with air bags would be if you ran the air bags over inflated without the trailer hooked up, and in that case, you're going to lose all your teeth.
I've heard worse advice, but not today.
