No mods to mine, and my door easily pops the handrail open. In fact, that is one of the things I checked when I first took delivery of my 5er in 2009.
My handrail mounts are mounted fairly close, about 1.5" from the edge of the mount to the edge of the door. I suppose that if they were mounted extremely close to the edge of the door it could pose a problem.
awaywego's solution seems to be the easiest fix to the problem, if you do indeed have trouble opening your door with handrail closed over it.
