That is a basic characteristic of the wrap around jaw locking mechanism. If the pin is putting pressure backward on the jaw, that jaw can’t rotate to unwrap. Backing slightly to take that pressure off the jaw is the key to easy release.
And IMHO the wrap around jaw is the most secure latch mechanism.
