It's hard to get the real feel unless you're there. We were in Tucson last winter and drove up to Summerhaven which is on route to Mount Lemon. I think it was at about 8000 feet. Yes it was a paved two lane road and the scenery was fabulous but coming back down, you had to avoid thinking things like what if the brakes or steering malfunction.
We also drove 89A North from Sedona in the back of a tour Jeep as well as 89A in our vehicle from Cottonwood through Jerome and over to Prescott. We saw a Class A motor-home travelling the other way which would be going down. Someone told us later they had seen a motor-home parked in the hospital parking lot. I hope that all worked out Ok.
I wouldn't recommend driving any of these routes with an RV although some do.
