I'm not sure what is prompting you to considering this, but think of it this way;
Depending on the interval you now change your oil, is it worth saving the cost of two or three oil changes to risk the cost of replacing a motor?
In my case, an oil change costs me about $68.00 using Royal Purple oil and an AC Delco filter and 30 minutes of my time. Using the oil life monitor to tell me when to change the oil, I get 8500 to 9000 miles on a LOF. To me, the cost savings would never be worth the risk.
