Only the top brass nipple is a check valve. That is where the hot water exits the tank, and the check valve is there so the water heater can be bypassed when winterizing with the one valve in the convenience center. We full time, and besides replacing the anode once a year, I also drain and flush the tank a couple more times a year to remove debris from the anode that tends to clog the check valve.
