Here in California we do things differently. The state and federal parks make you get reservations online to camp. These become available on certain days and usually get taken in a matter of minutes to an hour of becoming available. Many parks like Yosemite limit the number of visitors and you must also make reservations well in advance to even enter the park much less get a camp site. Oh yes, when you do get in don't be surprised at the number os camp sites that never get occupied. People reserve them and then don't use them.
