Welcome to the group. Not a dumb question at all.
We were in Florida a couple of months ago and know exactly what you're dealing with.
The vents under the steps lead to the basement storage area which is climate controlled so you must keep the hatches closed. I'm not aware of any forced air coming out of there with the AC running.
