2016 truck - screwed up story
Registration would normally have been $71.00.
Certain counties in Ohio have an emissions test requirement prior to getting a registration. It is performed every other year based on the year of the vehicle. Brand new vehicles are exempt for four years. 2020 was the first year an E-check was required for my truck. I went to the E-check station and was told I could not get an E-check because of the weight of my truck.
2016 F-350, Diesel, Crew Cab, Long Bed, Dually, 14000lbs GVWR. After several hours and much discussion with the BMV, the E-check station and Ohio EPA, depending on who you talk to, any vehicle with a GVWR over 10000lbs must be registered as a COMMERCIAL vehicle. WHAT THE ??????
I offered a weigh slip showing a weight of 9300lbs. No good, GVWR only.
Needless to say, I had no choice. The registration fee almost tripled and as an added insult, I could not keep my veterans tags.

The only work arounds for this is to make sure your don't live in a county that does the E-check or trade in every four years. Otherwise, just bite the bullet and pay the fee.
