Some people put volley balls or some ball of that size between the topper and roof of the slideout ... others do a bungee cord long ways with the topper and slide ... some spend more money on a bow system that retracts and extends with the slide topper ... others just wear ear plugs
Toppers keep debris off, but there is a downside as you've experienced.
