I think you are talking about the air admittance valve or what some call a quick vent. Commonly used on island sinks. If that is the case I'd replace it before I tried anything else. My experience is they can look good but not function correctly. They don't cost much, pretty easy to change, and a lot less work then digging into the underbelly. Then if the smell persist move to the more labor intensive task.
