I'm in the habit of doing like truckers do (most of them anyway) - before getting behind the wheel, turn your parking lights & flashers on and conduct a full walk around looking at everything. Carry a flashlight in the TV door pocket to use when it's dark. I've gotten in the habit of doing this not just before each trip, but after every stop too whenever I'm towing anything.
