I think you are right in your guess of there being a timer in the switch. You reset the timer after each run time to start over. Maybe it is to save the battery if you are away.

Problem with the timer theory is that it's not the same length of time when it shuts off. Also, it does it on shore power ... I have not tried it on battery power alone.
