I built mine for my 2002 truck initially, and on that truck, I only had the trailer plug below the bumper. I initially wanted to build them with the rubber all the way across, but I had to at least leave a hole to get the plug thru. I also couldn't find any rubber that was wide enough to go all the way across, so I got about the widest mud flaps that I could find, and that's what I used.

With that being said, knock on wood, I haven't see any rock chips on the front of our unit, either sides or middle, so I feel like they are doing something.

While I suppose that it's possible to get a rock thru the middle, I would be less worried about that, than the direct line of fire of the tire...
