If you are going thru the San Luis Valley (Alamosa area of Colorado) then late spring is a good time to visit the Great Sand Dunes NP. Weather is cooler and Medano Creek will be running across the base of the dunes (wadeable). Summer is very hot and creek is dry. And you can pick up the Cumbres & Toltec railroad just south at Antonito (great day trip).
And from there US 285 goes down to Santa Fe and I-25 to Albuquerque.
