I have an audio cable from the TV audio output to my sound system aux audio input. Doesn't get full surround sound. But even the front 3 speakers give much better sound than the little TV speakers.

With some sound systems and the right connections you can get full 5.1 surround sound via HDMI connections. But my older system doesn't support that.
