I find it is less stressful to just turn the main water valve off, and turn power off, to water heater. This way I don't sit and worry about broken water lines. I found that my electric bill goes down when I do this. Then when you return home, if you turn everything on, as soon as you get there, by the time you unpack from your trip, and get ready to relax, you have your hot water ready to go.
