I think the added 'arm' from the equalizer box is part of the problem. Also, the equalizer is taking the lateral force from two wheels, while the outboard hangers only take it from one.
So you have double the torque being applied over maybe 4 times the moment arm. The box is getting 8 times the twisting force of the outboard hangers
