Oh, I've had too many of those conversations in my life as well.

Walked in one time, saying I wanted a red Chevy 1500 with a 350 V8 (pre towing days), and they tell me that they have a blue one with a 305. After we got over the fact that I was NOT going to buy HIS truck, they did a dealer locate. Found one, EXACTLY what I was wanting. Went back the next day to pick it up, and it was gone from the locating dealer. Hummm. Would make me a great deal on a blue 305. Called locating dealer and they still had the truck. Lying bastards.

Went to another dealer, said, "I want this truck", and told them where it was. Went and got it, and we did the deal.

Walked out of a dealership cussing when we were looking for our current truck. Amazingly, I got a call the next day from the general manager, and their price was exactly what I was willing to pay the say before. Went and bought it somewhere else.

Don't have time for their games....
