In my opinion you need to keep the fireplace. If you go places where it is cool at night you want to be able to take the chill off using the electricity you are already paying for. We have our basement completely containerized with storage containers etc and have no wasted space at all and we use laptops for our computers so no monitors, cables and towers. Took a little getting used to, but now you couldn't get me to change back.
