Like everything about the car buying process you need to beat on the sales guy if you really want one. My factory backed warranty on my Grand Cherokee (lifetime unlimited miles) and the factory backed warranty on the ford (8y 125k) were available online from other dealers. I found the best price available, made the selling dealer meet or beat the price and in the case of the Ford knock a point off my APR.

I never bought them until we purchased our last two vehicles and I wouldn't have if not factory backed and had they not cover a ton of possible issues. In the case of my Grand Cherokee it's already paid for itself plus $1k when a major computer part failed. Oops I lied I bought one 10 years ago when I bought a used Mercedes. I knew I didn't want to spend 10k on an engine if it turned out to be a Lemon, simple insurance policy really. It almost paid for itself when the workings for the convertible died.
