You can buy a factory warranty from ANY dealership, even online. You can buy the warranty anytime within the original 36 month warranty. Bottom line: DO NOT buy an extended warranty at the time of purchase! If you decide to get one later, then seek quotes from dealerships across the nation. Just make sure they are offering the same factory extended warranty, not a proprietary warranty offered by their dealership exclusively.
Several years ago, when I bought a new Toyota Prius, I was offered the Toyota extended warranty at the obscene price of $3400 dollars at the time of purchase. I laughed. I already knew better. I bought the same warranty about 2 years later from a Toyota dealership in the mid-west for $1240. I used that warranty twice and ended up $600 to the plus with it and sold the car with warranty remaining for the new purchaser. It was a GREAT selling point while I was selling it! (I bought a new Prius, and did the same thing again with the extended warranty)
