I use one of these and hook the carabiner to a hole in my hitch. http://www.campingworld.com/shopping...6-length/57846
Works great and doesn't get tangled or inadvertently actuate. Wherever the hitch moves (I have a Pullrite Superglide), the breakaway cable moves with it. Simple, effective. I use the 6 foot length.
