I was finally able to get into the worse hit area yesterday and help a friend. He and his wife had just made it to the basement when the tornado ripped the entire house up and slammed it back down. It was left with only one wall partially standing. We worked for about 5 hours digging out clothing, photos, and anything of value that could be found. There is a storm system moving in this afternoon so anything that isn't retrieved today will be ruined. What is amazing about the path of this F-4 through Washington was that it avoided two commercial areas and numerous large churches. It followed a path through the town that only concentrated on residential areas. 99% of these destroyed homes had basements. I can't imagine how many would have been killed if there were no basements in this area.
