I have a 3500 diesel and after 20,000 miles it did improve. You will get better milage with two wheel drive rather then 4x4 and single rr wheels rather then dually. The more junk you keep off it the lighter it will be and that helps Trailer life has a good article in their yearly rating book.
The biggest factor is keeping the speed down
