Issue with thermostat (wiring?)

Hey all. Hope everyone is well.

Few months back my front ac unit stopped blowing cold. Would still kick on like normal but wouldn’t cool. So I just ran with my second ac for the rest of the year. I’m now realizing my heat pump is acting the same, it kicks on but doesn’t produce heat. The other day (while my thermostat was off) the furnace fan began blowing; nothing was igniting or blowing, just sounded like my fan underneath my stairs was running. Had to flip the breaker to stop it.

I had mice in my rig a few months ago. I’m assuming a wire got chewed up somewhere. I own a volt meter but have almost zero knowledge of electric. I’m really hoping there’s a way I can track this problem down and troubleshoot it myself. I tested the furnace and it seems to run good. I just hate the thought of getting into winter and having thermostat issues. An help is greatly appreciated.

Also if anyone knows a solid repair man in the Rhode Island area please share.

Thanks.
