I was part of a melodrama troupe for 16 years. Melodrama is different from normal theater in that is no fourth wall. In regular theater, there is an invisible fourth wall between the stage and the audience and the audience doesn't react with the actors, they just watch the show. In melodrama, there is no fourth wall and the audience becomes part of the action. It's more difficult to act in a melodrama because you not only have to know your lines and blocking but you also have to stay in character, keep the pace of the show and react with the audience while not letting the audience take over.
