Not exactly sure. I cleaned the check valve as best I could. The elec switch was bad so I used a jumper wire to by pass the switch........ for now.
I now have hot water.

The "barrel color is an off white color
but it could have been gray at one time.
Definitely not red.

bottom of the water heater ?
