I think you'll find that the spots were caused by "artillary fungus". Nasty stuff to get off! I would suspect that the spotted side was near some landscaping that might have had a mulch covering...

We got spoiled with a convection microwave at home so I would up retrofitting one. The only one I could find that would fit is made by Contoure - not top of the line, but seems to work OK.
