The brakes would only do something if the trailer rolled 6-12", I would bet the farm that the magnets aren't rated for continous duty.

Chock and block, don't rely on the brakes to hold.

I did a similar mod and just mounted a switch under the kitchen sink. It's accessable from the door near the steps, I just surface mounted a metal handy box. I used the same lighted switch.
