OK, so it is wired in series with the cable from pos to neg posts and as long as shore power is connected everything works great, as soon as I disconnect shore power and turn on a light all goes dead.

I put a plug in mine and that works really well....

I put a plug in mine and that works really well. I bought the plug at a local boat dealer. It is a 1" plug. The cap comes off pretty easy.

When I tried to pull the wires through the opening they disconnected from the wire nuts.
Which wire goes where?
Black to Black and white?
Red to white?
