I checked my roof seam when ours leaked this past spring, it had several cracks in the caulk along the cap. I used a roll of eterna bond and have not had a problem since.

Its the female end, an extension rod with female threads, the threaded rod is on the valve. I didn't think about replacing the whole rod, thanks thats a good idea
