Being a complete novice when I started out, I had a pretty steep learning curve. Right away I had an incident that caused considerable damage to the trailer. Thank goodness for insurance! I did seek out training for driving with an RV (
https://www.rvschool.com/). While helpful, it didn’t get me where I wanted to be with my backing skills. Thankfully, nearly everyplace we’ve gone, there has been someone knowledgeable to help with spotting, coaching, or even doing the backing for me.
On the rare occasion when there is no one available, I will get out, walk around and strategize how I wanted to get in. I would say to Dad, “Tell me when my wheels hit this mark.” Then I’d get out again and strategize the next move, and give him instructions. I’ve found he can’t really help me think it through. But I can use him as a spotter.
