Response to your private note, Part 5:

I would like to find someplace where I can practice backing skill besides an open parking lot. It’s hard to judge how you’re doing when the setting is not realistic with obstacles – like having vehicles parked close to the road, or other real obstacles to consider. I did spend a lot of time viewing YouTube videos of truck driver training/instruction on backing semi-trucks and trailers. That really did help with some of the strategies and thought processes. I think I’m getting better, but could still use some practice.

Hope this answers your questions and provides food for thought. Best wishes as you consider your future plans.

Response to your private note, Part 4:

Being a complete novice when I started out, I had a pretty steep learning curve. Right away I had an incident that caused considerable damage to the trailer. Thank goodness for insurance! I did seek out training for driving with an RV (https://www.rvschool.com/). While helpful, it didn’t get me where I wanted to be with my backing skills. Thankfully, nearly everyplace we’ve gone, there has been someone knowledgeable to help with spotting, coaching, or even doing the backing for me.

On the rare occasion when there is no one available, I will get out, walk around and strategize how I wanted to get in. I would say to Dad, “Tell me when my wheels hit this mark.” Then I’d get out again and strategize the next move, and give him instructions. I’ve found he can’t really help me think it through. But I can use him as a spotter.

Response to your private note, Part 3:

I just traded my 2015 Silverado 3500 LTZ for a 2020 (same model). I found a very good deal in Huntsville, AL. This will provide much-desired safety and convenience features. Oh, my! It’s so much easier to drive. I love it already! It will definitely make my life on the road easier.
Last winter (‘18-‘19), we traveled around the Southwest US – Texas, New Mexico, Arizona – for about 4 months. I had intended to do some summer travel in ’19, but had a number of small medical issues to resolve. Thankfully, that is all behind me, and I am well! This winter (2020), we spent about 2 months in Georgia and Florida. Right now, I am on my own in Alabama. This is the first extensive time away I’ve taken on my own. It’s working out just fine.

Response to your private note, Part 2:

I live in Bloomington, Illinois and retired in July 2018. When considering various retirement travel options, it didn’t take long for me to conclude I wanted some type of RV. I travel with my parents most of the time. They are 88 and 90, now, but still able-bodied. I do all the driving. Dad’s cognitive abilities are waning a bit, but with some prompting, he can help with utility connections and the heavier work. Mom does most of the inside organizing. It works out well.

To accommodate the three of us, I bought a 41’ Montana High Country 5th wheel with a mid-bonus room. I have customized that room by making a Murphy bed that is adult-sized. That’s where I sleep, while they use the master bedroom. We share the closet and dresser. We are quite comfortable with the arrangement. I haven’t found a MH that would accommodate us as well, so I’m sticking with the 5th wheel for a while.

NOTE: There must be a setting that allows you to receive private messages, which you have set to "No," or the equivalent. I tried to send this as a reply to your message, but it would not allow me. Now I will try this method, but I have to divide my response into smaller chunks, as the length of "comments" is limited to 1000 characters. We'll get this done one way or the other!

Thank you for your note! Last week I spent an hour or so responding, and when I hit the Submit button, it vanished. Somehow, I was no longer logged on. This time, I’m composing my response in Word, so I can save, copy and paste ultimately on the site.

I’m very sorry for your husband’s medical situation. Life can change so quickly. I pray for blessings despite the unfortunate circumstances.
