Thinking of replacing tires with G614

Hi,

I have a 2008 Montana 3400 with the Goodyear Marathon tires 235/80R15 ... I am thing about replacing these tires with the Goodyear 614s that a lot of folks recommend. Does anyone see any problems with this? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Look at the backside of one of the wheels(rims). If it is stamped with 110psi and 3700 plus lbs, then you are good to go. Assume you did a typo and actually have 16" and not 15"... A lot depends on how heavy your rv is, but I really developed a distrust for the chinese marathons after two blowouts where the tires ripped out 60-75% of the sidewall right at the edge of the tread and they are only good for 65mph without damage. Only problem I see is that arguably the Sailun S637 is a better tire then the G614's. I would do yourself a favor ,and check them out. They are about half the price of a G614.

If you have the OEM wheels they are most likely 80# wheels and wouldn't be good for 614's. 100# wheels didn't become the standard until sometime during the 2010 model year. As stated above, then inside of the wheels will tell the story.

Check your rims on the inside. My previous Sob fiver was a 2007 model year and it came with 110# rated rims, so there probably is no standard among manufacturers.

I can't see that there would be a problem running the G range tire, Goodyear or Sailun, at 80 psi, you just don't get the advantage of more weight capacity that the higher pressure gets you, at 80 psi, the weight capacity is the same as the Marathon, 3042 lbs. What you would get is a much stronger tire, and probably would not have any problems at the lower pressure. I would talk to your favorite tire guy to see what his thoughts are on running these at 80 psi.

rohrmann is correct. This is good information.

My RV was supplied with E rated tires. My trusted tire guy, another tire guy and a Goodyear rep all offered the same information: what matters is the tire loading chart. Here's the Goodyear tire loading chart for the 614 - http://www.goodyearrvtires.com/pdfs/rv_inflation.pdf
If you run the 614 at 80lbs it is good to 3042 lbs.

I've been running mine for 1 year now - approx 2500 miles without problems. No sign of edge wear.

Sounds like good information as the G rated tire is a stronger tire. I am not sure but I think they are all steel belts in those G rated tires. Side wall is probably a lot more substantial also.

When I replace mine I will be going G rated tires. Just wish I has the 17.5" rims. If I had yo replace rims I would probably go that route.

I had a 2007 3400 and ran them on it. When I weighed it I found that I only needed 80 pounds per the GoodYear chart. You don't have to run them at 110 pounds unless your weight calls for it. I had a little over 35K on them.

Our first fiver was a used 2008 3400RL. The previous owner had installed the new G614's already. My rims were rated for the higher pressure.

I would also suggest that you crawl under and check the back of the rim to see how it is stamped. It seems that some may have had the higher rated rims and some may have not in 2008.

A call to Goodyear and they will tell you that you must have a 6 1/2 inch rime to install G6-14 tires. Many of these Montana's have 6 inch rims..Does everyone know that???

I have been running G614's on the OEM rims for over 5 years now without a trace of a problem of any kind, which includes no signs of any abnormal tire wear??

Goodyear G614's are still offered as an option on these rigs, and they come installed on the same 6" rims. We haven't had any issue with them on our rig either.

I am just quoting Goodyear spec's for the tires. My G6-14s had better be on 6.5 rims. What would be the consequences of running a tire on a rim not spec'ed for that tire. We will be having a chat with Tredit and Keystone.

We had a friend that wanted G6 14's on His RV. Goodyear told him he did not have the proper rims.

I have not had problems but I need a answer.

We researched for more information on the rim size. Good year spec's show that the proper rime size is 6.0 to 7.5. for the G614.I am unable to post the documentation as it is in PDF and I do not know how to do that.

I jumped to soon on insufficient information.

Howdy folks......
I am new to this site. A few weeks ago lynn and I ordered a 2016 Montana 3790RD. We included the Goodyear "G" rated tire option. Am I correct in understanding they are the tires that you folks are discussing ??
