View Full Version : BFG Truck Tire Problem

My hometown tire guy suggested the BFG Rugged Terrain 275/70/18 tires for my F350. They were rated with plenty of weight, had a decent tread if I needed it for traction, and were quiet on the highway. He knocked a few dollars off and put them on for $212 each.

With right at 30,000 miles on them I was traveling from Florida to Illinois earlier this week pulling a 24' enclosed trailer, not much weight. Left rear BFG developed a raised spot on a section of the inside tread. Stopped at a tire shop in Clarksville and they confirmed it was coming apart. For about 40 miles prior to stopping at tire shop it was "hopping" pretty good.

To make a long story short, Clarksville dealer had a used tire the correct size he mounted/balanced for me ($45.00) to get me the last 400 miles.

My hometown dealer measured tread left on old tire, confirmed separation issue, and replaced the BFG for $95.00.

I didn't think that was too bad of a deal. He said he inspected the other 3 tires and all looked good. According to him they had at least another 15,000 to 20,000 of life left in them.

One side of my brain is telling me that if one started to separate then maybe another one could. The other side of my brain is telling me not to spend $700 dollars if you don't have to.

Thoughts?

Check the internet and see if it's a known problem. On off issues do occur with good tires. I ran my OEM BFG's to death with no problems.

Had BFG commercial TA`s [old style] on my dually, had left front separate, replaced. had right front separate, replaced....then the inside rear dual!!! 30K miles, all wearing great, 3 yrs old. properly inflated , all that stuff!! BFG did warranty ALL 6 tires, replaced with the new TA 2. Thanks BFG for the great customer service. 235-80-17 stock size tires..no recalls on this size.

Get a set of Goodyear Marathons....I hear they are really superb tires for carrying heavy loads! :D ;) :D

I've heard it's nice to have the same tire on the truck as the trailer particularly if they're Marathons. That way if two blow you have spares for each.

I don't know if anyone remembers my Michelin tire stories on my '06 Ford, but it is sure making me think twice about using them in my future.

When not towing I used to deflate all around from 65/75 to 55/60 so that when the truck was not loaded it didn't bounce around as much when driving around. After the third tire in the set separated (they all had the same original datecode, I stopped the deflating/inflating procedure and so far no problems so all tires are kept at maximum pressure. But three tires are newer and one of the remaining two are still with me (one was the spare and not as worn as the other four and is on the truck, and the fifth is now a now hanging under the truck as the spare that is old but seems okay for the current spare.

While the symptoms or configureation are not the same, it just goes to show that tires are not flawless even with adequate care. All three tires failed with the tread separation, no bubbles and I don't believe I was mistreating them.

In any case, it seems we are better educated, better prepared and able to handle most tire situations. Good luck to all of youse...

Any tire, any brand, can have a problem. I wouldn't hit the panic button because one went bad. The trucks, the trailers we pull, everything made by man can be a lemon. It doesn't suggest all in kind are lemons though...
