Got some new shoes on the 5er today

Although my Marathons on this 5er had only about 2K miles on them, I was often worried going down the road with them. I have actually had good luck with the Marathons on my last two 5ers, but I felt as though I was living on borrowed time and was due for my luck to run out. I have a TST TPMS, checked my tires before and during every trip, but "it" seems to eventually happen to everyone. I did a lot of research here and elsewhere and settled on the Geostar G574s. I know they are not the favorite of everyone, but I believe they will work well for me. While both tires were off the wheels I took the opportunity to compare the Marathons with the Goestars and there was no comparison. The difference in weight alone was quite impressive. I will continue to use my TPMS and check my tires often, but I will definitely have more confidence in my tires now.

Glenn we did the same as you when we got ours. I thought the failures that others had were due to "their negligence" or other reasons. Would Keystone really put a tire on these 5ers that weren't up to the task? After reading on this forum about ownwers who were really diligent about tire maintenance were haveing hese failures I knew we had replace the tires. It is disappointing that Keystone doesn't acknowledge the issue or at least start puting the correct tires on these RVs. You will have less to worry about going forward.

I guess we will never know how many tire failures occur when these rigs are being transported to the dealers. I suppose being dry and unloaded would make a huge difference.

My new rig had Missions when new, but I replaced them with Marathons and had good luck with them until they aged out, and I think much of the difference is that the Marathons were cared for me from the start knowing they could be problematic, then finally aged out. I now use Maxxis and they are doing well so far and now, with full-timing and making sure I do not abuse them (no curb jumping, speeding, and religiously checking inflation, parked for a while or not).

If Keystone management at the time was to be believed there really weren't that many problems with Marathons during the delivery run. Tire damage is cumulative, however, so the speeding and other things that may have happened were in the tire waiting to be added too once the new owner took them out.

Congratulations on those new shoes for monte! Yes, marathons are very light as well as lightly constructed. It is never going to handle a big fifth wheel over time. I carry my spare tire/wheel in the bed of the truck and everytime I move it around and have to grunt, I say yes...that's a tire to trust! Now you can take care of the geos and they will take care of you. John

While in San Diego went to La Mesa RV to check out their parts dept. While at the rv dealer we started looking at some of the new 5th wheels. I checked the tires on the Big Horn trailers and they are wearing Sailun tires. Obviously Forrest River knows they need to install better tires.

A Goodyear knock-off from over there. Should provide longer life than a like sized polyester tire. Probably needs to be on 6 and 1/2" rim like the other steel cased tires of the same size.
