Hello, Newbie here.

We're picking up our new truck from the dealer in a couple of weeks and there are two choices in tires for our 2013 Dodge 3500 4x4 dually. We will be pulling a Montana 5er (about 12K empty) It comes with the LT 275/70R18E 18x8 inch aluminum rim (all season tires). The other, upgraded choice is the LT 235/80R17E 17x6 inch rim (these are on/off road tires).

Should we be more concerned with the rim size vs the tire size at the moment? I'm sure we will choose a tire much better suited to full timing when it comes time to replace them, but don't want to have to buy new rims also if we don't have to.

Between the two choices, which would be best for now?

Thank you.

The LOAD RANGE "E" is what's important.

If you are going to be full timing, I would think the standard tires will be fine, they should be lots more quiet as you drive down the road beacuse they should be more of a road tire than an on/off tires.

Size wise, I really dont think it matters.

I would always go with the bigger rims myself. But I am not a tire/rim expert either.

If both tires have the same load rating I would go with the size that is cheapest to replace

I'd opt for the 'all season' not the 'off road.' The off road normally are louder, more rough riding, hurt mpg and cost more.

Don't want to step on any toes and I'm not a Mopar person, but I think that things have gotten mixed up. My guess would be that the 18x8 rims are for a SRW as two 8 inch rims plus the spacing between the tires would possibily stick out past the fenders. While 17x6 or maybe 17x6.5 sounds more normal to me for a Dually application. Again, not a Mopar/Ram/Dodge (what ever they're called these days) person, but pretty sure that's the way the GMs are configured, much more options in the wheel/tire combos for SRW. If I'm all wet just forget I posted.

A DRW Ram has two different tires available, but both are 17" rims. The 18" are SRW only.
