Finding that free place to overnight

When you're headed for the Rally, or anywhere else for that matter, and want to overnight for free, how do you find a place. I know there's apps, both free and otherwise, and I have most of those, but I never found them convenient to use when your out in strange territory (usually rural). On the Coach-Net news letter the other day I found this site: http://www.overnightrvparking.com
The bad news is it costs $25 a year. The good news is you get that back the first night you don't pay to camp. For me, it put everything I wanted in one place. What the restrictions were, what was near there for eating etc. and who to contact if necessary. This is for information only, I'm not endorsing the site. It's just what I was looking for and so I'm sharing it. On the other hand, if you refer someone or if you inform them of a new place to camp or changes to an existing one you get additional weeks on your subscription. When we have to overnight while traveling from one destination to another we usually seek out a Cracker Barrel but don't stop in until around closing time so as not to interfere with customer traffic. And we always go in and ask permission from the store manager. We've never been turned down and most have very ample parking including rv parking areas. We carry just enough water to shower up with the next morning before we go inside for their breakfast. We rarely see other rv'ers doing this. We feel safe and secure here as there usually are some deliveries sometime in the night. Other than Cracker Barrel we've stayed at truck stops w/restaurants and park out of the way of the big rigs. Occasionally we'll start traveling very late in the day, drive though the night(lighter traffic and no sun glare) and stay at interstate rest areas. Most don't allow overnighting but since we'll spend 6 or 7 hours there during the day resting up, we've never been approached about it. If we're on the road more than one night we'll alternate with a campground that's close to the highway. We carry a Woodall's book with us and sometimes plan a stop thru that. We've used Google maps and the truck's gps to find stops also.

Cool deal Dick, when we get back on the road, I will join and give you the credit, a guy can't have too many sources. Taking the winter off from travel, we are half-way into tiling the great-room and hall.

We used to do the Walmart/Cracker Barrel stops but I found I was just not getting good sleep. I just worried too much bout some one banging on the door or some nut case running into the RV or a truck backing in and clipping our slides.....Not a lot of fun sleeping with a gun. So now we have a couple of RV park locator Apps and we look for a camp ground. We just found another good app that shows not only RV parks but also Walmarts. Give all the info from Tn #s to directions. It's called RV Parky....If you look up Allstays you can find locations for all the different truck stops, Lowes, Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, and other places that allow overnites. It shows if you are allowed to overnite at the location or not.

Many of the small towns in eastern Colorado has city parks with RV dump, potable water, drinking water, bathrooms with showers that allow overnight parking for travelers at no charge. I know at one time I found a site on the internet that gave state by state locations for free parking in City Parks.

There are a lot of them out there and I have most of my phone. I've found that for me, they are hard to use or unreliable and so I posted this as another option. Everyone has to find something they're comfortable with and for me this works.

We gave up on FREE places for the same reason as others, don't get good sleep. What we do instead is look for something on the cheaper side and have had good luck finding them. If we stay at a Wal-Mart,cracker barrel etc we spend at least 20$ inside so if I can find a place for 20-25$ with elec and water only and I cook dinner it balances out.

I have a friend that Boondocks a lot and said churches are a good place depending on the day of week.
