Here is a poem which our veterinarian gave us when the time had come to put our dog to sleep. It helped us and we want to share it with our friends. I know that typing this is going to bring back a flood of memories and I won't be dry-eyed when I finish. I hope it helps you.

"IF IT SHOULD BE"

If it should be that I grow week,
And the pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears,
You'd not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And stay with me until the end,
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you'll see,
The kindness that you did for me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you,
Who had this painful thing to do,
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Bill, as you know Lorraine and I are not pet owners but we do know the suffering that all pet owners go through when they have to put their pet down. We sympathize with each and everyone of you.

That poem has to be the most touching beautiful poem I have read in a long time. It even brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for posting it.

I just read your poem. We are traveling with two pets that I know won't be with us next year at this time. Your poem, along with Rainbow Bridge, help us pet owners.
Thanks

Carol

Okay, I'm crying. These words so fit the look that my domberman had in eyes that morning so many years ago. I'm sure that what he was trying to tell me. Thank you.
