I did install the 3/4'' styrofoam but did not have to remove the grills. I did paint them brown to match the grill and carpet and cut them snug enough to just press them against the grills. I can just pull them out in winter and push them back against the grill in summer. Unless you are really looking for them you want hardly notice them.
