S.O. 50 amp cord

I frequently see reference to S.O.cord that is "lighter and more flexible"than regular 50 amp. What does S.O. stand for, what do I ask for and where do I buy it? Tried to find it online but I evidently did not use the secret words.

S.O. is a stranded wire very flexible heavily shielded oil resistant wire. Most RV dealerships carry it with one or both ends. If you're wiring inside a building I'm not sure about using it in that matter.

This is at Home Depot.com
250 ft. 8/4 Black Portable Power SOOW Electrical Cord

If you remove the periods you will get the correct results when searching. It's SO (also SOW, SOO, SJW and a slew of other types). The letters are codes for the cable type and properties.

Then it was a very good day. This is what I really like about this forum.

The letters mean something. SO is different than SOW and SOOW:

  • S = Service cord
  • J = Junior service cord
  • O = Oil-resistant outside jacket
  • OO = Oil-resistant both inside insulation and outside jacket
  • W = Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) designation for weather and water resistance
  • T = Thermoplastic
  • E = Elastomer

Mostly, you will find SOOW as it meets all specs.
