I just received a call from Keystone

It was about the rear window to our 2013 Montana.

She wanted to know if my rear escape window was on the same side as the ladder.

Dose seem like something they should know. Did you ask them what their plans showed?

Isn't there something inherently wrong with thinking the escape window may be behind the ladder?

Common sense. But then they are the same folks who failed to remove the packing material from the back of our refrigerator before installing in our 2015 causing a quick failure.

I remember reading somewhere earlier that someone was planning on notifying the NHTSA about their rear emegency window be blocked by the ladder and not useable.
I wonder if this is the reason for contacting you.
Did anyone else ever hear about this? I will try to see if I can find a link

I haven't tried climbing out the window, but my Mountaineer has the ladder behind the escape window. I had to climb into the trailer because the door lock broke and luckily I had left this window open. It made entry much easier, so maybe exiting would be easier too?????

That is the same question that the gentlemen from the NHTSA asked me after I was done filing a complaint about the step recall. He noted there will be a recall regarding this shortly as it sounds like it was a problem for several models.

I have a 2012 3750FL. My ladder is in front of the rear window in the bedroom. I never looked that close at the rear emergency window nor have I tried to open it. I'm guessing you pull up on the red latches and the whole rear window would swing open at the bottom. If this is how it opens then yes it would hit my ladder. I will take a very close look the next time I go to the storage unit.

If keystone has a recall I'm wondering what the fix would be. On the 3750Fl the back window is big and take up almost the whole width of the rear cap. I don't think there is room to mount the ladder without the window hitting it. The only quick and cheap fix that I can see Keystone doing if possible would be to make the ladders removable. Then have some sort of disclaimer stating that the ladder must be removed while the unit is occupied or traveling. That would make me a very unhappy camper if they did that.

Doesn't the entire emergency window pop out. Still seems like a stupid place to put it.

Yes, this is a recall in the making. When I was contacting the Feds about Keystone could not get me a latch for my emergency escape window this was asked. I sent them a picture of mine, which is not behind the ladder.

Keystone is not the only one with this issue.

If your ladder is behind your emergency escape window, go to the web site https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml and file a complaint.

Jim is right. I've seen posts on the Keystone and Good Sam forums complaining about this issue, but they weren't about Montanas so I didn't pay much attention.

I'm with Rich. Doesn't the whole window drop off? I would think the ladder would make it easier to get out. Don't have to worry about boken bones from the drop.

Every rig we have owned has the same emergency window concept. Latch on the bottom, top is hinged, you push open and crawl out.

I have good news and no so good news. Did a closer inspection of my 3750FL today. The good news is that big back window in the bedroom behind the ladder is NOT the emergency exit window. The not so good news is that the emergency exit window is the smaller window above the bed in the slide out. Now this window is a lot smaller. I didn't measure it yet but I'm guessing it's about 3 ft wide + or- and about 2.5 to 3 ft tall. It is about a 7 foot drop from the bottom of the window to the ground. That was on a flat concrete surface in my storage unit. I'm guessing it could be higher at a campsite depending on the ground. At 6'1" and 230 lbs not an easy exit at 50+ years old. 20 years ago no problem. Now not so much..

I received the same phone call from Keystone yesterday about the rear Emergency Window. They asked if it was behind the ladder or not. Mine is Not! She said ok and thank you. I asked her why they called about this and she stated it is because some 2013 units had the rear Emergency Escape window installed behind the ladder by mistake and this makes it impossible to open the window all of the way and escape out it. They will have to be reinstalled on the other side.

We have a 2012 3582 that has the emergency window behind the ladder. I have wondered about that since we bought it. Are the calls going to all Montana owners or do you have to make a complaint?

We figured the windows are not a real fast/viable option for a quick exit. I have a welders blanket and a large fire extinguisher for both of us to make a run for the door.
