Metal Valve Stems

Now I know why it is important to use metal valve stems on TPMS. Got back from a weekend camping trip and told DW that I wanted to remove the Pressure Pro sensors before we unhooked the Monte. Took off all of them and got to the front passenger side of my TV and as I twisted the sensor off, the whole valve stem came with it leaving a quickly deflating tire on my truck. Luckily I was in my driveway. Now have to wait until morning to get tire fixed. Yes, it will be with a metal valve stem. Will schedule to have them all replaced.

You need to put a little never seize on the stem.

I tried the same thing on the dually rims, Steve. First trip out, pressure monitor shows a leak (of course on the inner tire). A quick check showed I could actualy unseal the rubber valve stem be simply pressing it sideways. The sensors were doing the same thing when in motion due to the centrifugal forces applied to the stems. We also have steel stems on all four rear tv tires now.

I am having a time getting the metal stems to fit. Bought 10 today and when we went to replace the damaged one, had to find a rubber washer to put under the metal washer to tighten up the nut to get it to seal. The wheel rim has a little curve in it where the metal washer goes (under the nut) and it is just enough curve that it wouldn't seal tight. Bought the high pressure stems at a truck part place like people suggested but had to "Schenk-rig" it to make it work. Looks like I will have to do it on the other 9 tires.

I had new tires put on both the truck and Montana a week ago and the shop put in metal stems in all tires without my asking. They had uses regular stems the last time the same shop put tires on my truck. Very happy as the same price I guess.

Found a similar item on ebay at a good price and shipping was free and fast. Needed them for our TR-6 rims.
