Gentlemen,

Here are additional diseases the VA has recently associated with exposure to Agent Orange:ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), Parkinson’s disease, B cell leukemia or ischemic heart disease (known also as coronary artery disease).

Guys Thanks. I have not started treatment yet. My doctor is sending me to UNC Chapel Heel Hospital for a second opinion. My appointment is 18 Feb. I will keep you posted as things progress. We will see you somewhere around the campfire this summer. We just got back fro Longs SC after spending a great weekend with NCFischer and Bob and Pam (see Myrtle Beach Circle on the forum). Thanks for your support.

Second opinion. I was called last Friday and told there was a cancellation for today and was asked if I would like to move my appointment up one week, so I took it. We met with a team of folks (5) to discuss my case. The pathologist at Chapel Hill reviewed all my charts and scan results and is confident that the cancer has not spread outside the prostrate. These folks are good. They make you feel at ease and take their time with you. Everyone there agrees that I am a good candidate for either procedure (External Radiation or Surgery). The surgical doctor we met with specializes lararoscopic surgery and the Oncologist in the radiation department is an Assistant Professor at UNC. All our questions were answered and I was told that I did not have to make a decision today and to take my time. Which ever way I go I will have the procedure done at UNC. Thanks to all for your continued thoughts and prayers.

I, as well as many men in my Man-to-Man group, have had laparoscopic (Da Vinci) surgery and we are all of the opinion that it is/was an excellent method for removal of the prostate. There is less chance of nerve damage and greatly reduced blood loss during the procedure.

I elected for removal of the prostate because (at the time) surgery was not an option following radiation if the cancer recurs. I don't know if that has changed. If it has not, then the treatment following radiation would be hormone based.

Hope this helps your decision!

For those with a high PSA and no detectable cancer. Color transrectal ultrasound may show cancer where B&W ultrasound along with biopsies may not. The color ultrasound shows increased blood flow in the area of possible cancer and a biopsy would be used to confirm the cancerous area.

In my case, biopsies did not show the cancer (my PSA was ~ 8-9) and it was not detected until I had a TURP performed because of urinary problems.

I am NOT a medical person-just been there, done that, and interface with lots of men who have had different procedures in the Man-to-Man group I attend.

I know this is off subject for this forum but I thought the information would be helpful to all the members.

ARJ,
Thanks. You hit the nail right on the head. You said everything we heard while at Chapel Hill. It supports the decision I am in favor of. Again thanks.

You're welcome George. The advice to take your time before deciding is good advice.
