Madison, WI to Goshen - Best route?

I am going to be coming into Goshen from the west (Minneapolis/Madison) for the Rally. Have been in Chicago several times. However, never with a 40 ft 5ver. Can someone please route me a comfortable way around that bottleneck? Want to avoid the I-80/90 tollway if possible.

we prefer a route via Kankakee Illinois, 2 lane roads, not a lot of traffic, lots of corn fields, slow down for all RR tracks!

did the I 90 thing around Chicago one time, never again, construction hel* hole!

I-94 from Minneapolis then 1-39 to CR17 and Kankakee like Carol says. There is one small toll at Rockford but very small and the road is great. Do not take Hwy 30 thru Chicago Heights. We made that mistakee once and never again. I would rather take 80/90 than that one.

Helen, Chicago Heights is a "beauty" just don't stop, or have any type of problems. I assume it looks the same in parts of LA. Bad inner city blight. Go 7 miles directly east and your in front of my property. Avg homes being built here are 300k, not bad. New subdivisions within .5 mi 1 to 3 million so the area will change quick once you leave Il. US 30 is a great 4 lane road and is not so extremly far south as Kankakee Il. Taking US 30 or US 6 is a great alt to the expressways going East/West.

This is just a simple explanation since I live in this area.
Chuck
PS Dave areas around Fl dominated by a certain mouse also make me cringe, so it is just what you are use to when pulling the 5th. The trip from Wi down thru Il will be congested but very doable. Tell me what you want to do and I'll give you the latest on the roads and construction since I know guys traveling it daily for work.

Chuck, I agree that 30 is great once you get out of Il. but besides the blight there was a stop sign or stop lights on almost every corner. It took forever to get through. We swore never to go that way again.

Sailer proposed a good option... We are actually coming down out of Yorkton, SK to Minot, ND. If I do my Street Atlas 2008 route from there along US 2, it is only 100 miles further going through the UP of MI and down to Goshen. From Minot to Goshen through Chicago/Kankakee is 1133 miles. From Minot thru the UP is 1234 miles. Also, US is a very familiar road to me - my son was stationed at Minot AFB for 6 years (except for 6 months in the Gulf when we first went into Iraq, and then 1 yr in Korea in a RED HORSE unit).

HOWEVER, some would say that while traveling and seeing this great country, who wants to travel FAMILIAR roads??? (Exempting some areas in S. Chicago...).

So still looking for input S. of Chicago. Great ideas so far.

Helen, stop light on every corner, isn't this the dream of corporate america? use more gas. I better stop here as this "gas" subject burns me up.
Have a great trip which ever way you go.
