Adding an amp meter
For the electrical wizards out there. I would like to add an amp meter to the 12V system so I can see what my total draw is at any given time. Anybody have clue on which wire would be a likely candidate to put the meter on? It is a 30A meter. Thanks.

Hi
You will want an amp meter that uses a remote shunt like the ones used in large yachts
Follow the installation instruction carefully the length of the wires to the shunt is critical.
Here is an example.

We're really happy with our TriMetric. A little pricey but well worth it IMHO.

Do you need a battery disconnect beteeen the shunt and monitor to prevent the minitor from draining juice?

The Trimetric draws less than 1 AH per day with the display on and 1/2 AH with the display off so no, you don't need to disconnect it to prevent the meter from draining the battery.

Selecting the correct wire may not be possible. The wire leaving the inverter/charger, the one that feeds the fuse pannelis most likely the best choice. That will tell you the normal loads but the landing gear legs and the slide motor usually do not go through the i/c.

The Trimetric and its shunt connects inline on the cable from the negative terminal on the battery as the first connection after the battery. This will show all trailer loads including jacks, slides, and what goes through the power panel.

I do believe I have seen surge protectors that will display amps.
(don't need to tap into anything)

Hi
The surge protector will only show the amps and voltage on the AC shore power. The system being talked about show all the 12V power including the charge rate from the converter.
They are 2 different systems.
