Tire Pressure Monitoring System

My husband wants a tire pressure monitoring system, so I want to buy us this for Christmas. Do you think they are necessary, and if so, what brand have you had the best luck with? Should we get it set up for the tow vehicle AND the 5th wheel. Any other general good advice about TPMS??

I know many of us use the TST 507 TPMS. Some use the flow thru sensors (meaning you can add air without removing the sensor) and some use the non flow thru. Both have user replaceable batteries. Mine are not flow thru, but I only have to add air once or twice a season. Mine are only on the trailer as the truck has a built in TPMS.

Some have also needed a repeater to insure good signal from the trailer sensors to the monitor in the truck. I recently bought a repeater. Mine worked well without it MOST of the time. But occasionally it would lose signal to one or more sensors.

Most of us the TST 507 system. I'm sure there are others just as good.
Are they necessary? I went for 30 years without one. So they aren't necessary but if you have a blowout they could save you thousands of dollars. The better your tires are the less chance you might need one. If you still have the OEM tires it is necessary because sooner or later you WILL have a blowout. If you have good G rated tires not as much. For peice of mind get one for his Christmas present.

I also use the 507 non-flowthru valves.
I went for 9 years without them. But when at the Goshen Rally in 2014, my wife and I went on a geneology excursion (without trailer). We were about 2 miles out of a small town and my dash console came up with a tire pressure warning - down to 45 lbs or something. Got out to check it and it was down to around 41-42. Drove in to town to a gas station and started adding air and it was down to 30 when I started and 25 after a minute or 2. Jump in truck and drove down street to tire repair place a mile away and tire was at 20 or so. Had a split sidewall.
Replace tire and on the way.
Without a tps I would have been in the country changing my tire. And I DON'T want to do that with the trailer or have it blow out.

I recently bought a EEZTire system with 8 non-flow through sensors from Amazon to monitor all of my tires. Very happy with it and in addition to safety, very convenient as I don't have to scurry around 8 tires to check pressure before rolling out in the morning.

I also have the TST 507 with flow thru sensors. When you consider how many RV's you see by the side of the road with tire issues the peace of mind you get from being able to monitor your tires is essential.

I agree with Dick above. When you think about how much weight Montana puts on only the two axles, instead of having 3 axles for piece of mind, I went with the TST 507 flow thru system, and now can monitor the tire pressure and temps the whole time we are driving. Plus you can set alarms to come on if it drops or climbs too much, so you don't have to be actually watching it all the time. I would hate to see how the trailer reacts, when one tire blows out, and all of the weight is on only one wheel on one side? I would rather know if something is failing before it totally blows. That is why we buy these sensors.

I used an innotechrv system. It monitors both pressure and temp. I don't know how it compares to the other systems mentioned, but it worked well for me and saved the RV from any damage this past Sept.

Pressure pro here for about 8 years now. Replaced the sensors last year as batteries within each sensor were starting to fail. Still have original monitor, excellent product.

TST 507 with flow through sensors on trailer only. Flow through so don't seem to work real well, still have to remove them to adjust pressure, otherwise very slow to fill to pressure.

I don't think of a TPMS as a necessity, however I wouldn't mind having one. And don't forget a sensor for the spares. Needing the spare and finding it with too little air is worse than needing it in the first place, since it's not going solve your tire problem if you can't use the spare immediately.

I would not mind getting one of these systems as a Christmas gift. I check all my tire's PSI every time prior to a trip and being able to check all of them from one place without having to apply a tire gauge to each and every tire could be a time-saver (note I only occasionally check PSI on the TV or RV spare - about every fifth trip). Too bad there is no way to automatically check the torque on the wheels then trip prep time savings would be very dramatic.

My ONLY concern for a TPMS prior to a trip is that some places we camp are crowded, that is, other RVs are close by and might try to read another owner's tires. But what are the odds? I wonder if there's any system where you can "name" a sensor so that you know which one's are yours that you are reading. Too much to ask, I guess.

I have the TST 507 with flow thru sensors on the trailer, non flow thru on the front of truck and internal sensors on rear duallies. Each sensor has a specific ID that you program into monitor so your monitor only reads your sensors.

I have had Pressure Pro for 9 years--sure gives me some confidence on the condition of the trailer tires. As for blowouts, my experience from 2 blowouts, they happen suddenly--at least in my cases. The tire monitor system did not warn me. I don't count on it to warn of a sudden blowout. If your system is faster--great.

Although blowouts happen, I am sure many of the catastrophic tire failures are also due to the driver unknowingly losing air in a tire, running the tire low/flat at highway speeds, and it disintegrating. Those are the ones that a TPMS can prevent. Knowing the tire is losing air may also give you time to make it to a tire shop, rather than be stuck on the side of a highway calling ERS or changing the tire yourself.

Although I have mine set to alarm on low pressure, I still glance at the display regularly just to confirm all pressures are still in the normal range. Just the feeling of peace of mind is worth the costs of the TPMS even though I have never had a low tire while traveling.

I have had several low air pressure warnings--I have mine at 70psi for my traveling pressure at 80 psi. I agree that TPMS are wonderful addition and give you info that is not available from other monitors.

TPMS on my 3720. I always check my pressures before any trip. I always have to bring pressures up to 80 before I leave. I take a glance at the monitor frequently during trips.

First of all not all of use the same TPMS, I have used the Pressure Pro System for 10 plus years. Never a problem. And yes it is important to know if you are loosing pressure on the trailer tires to give you time to slow down and correct the situation.

We would not leave the driveway without the TPMS . We have the TST 507 as most do. We had another brand before that and both worked perfectly. We have had a TPMS on our Montana's since 2006 and saved the day more than once. They can not alert you of a blowout but will alert to a loss of pressure that will look like a blowout once the tire comes off the rim.
We saw a example of that on the way to Florida this year as a I ton dually came by me with smoke coming off his right outer dually tire and about a mile in front of me the tire came apart I saw it buckle and come off the rim a TPMS may have saved the day.

The TST 507 can't read somebody else's pressure. Each wheel has an individual number that must be registered to the base unit before it will work.
